You paid for a website. It has your logo, some good job photos, a list of services and your phone number at the bottom. It looks professional. Nobody has ever complained about it.
And yet you can’t point to a single job it won you last month.
That’s not bad luck. It’s how most contractor websites were designed to work: as a digital business card. They prove you exist. They don’t do anything after that.
The site was built for a world that’s gone
Ten or fifteen years ago, a homeowner with a leaking roof picked up the phone. Your website’s only job was to look legitimate so they felt comfortable calling. A logo, a few photos and a phone number did that fine.
Homeowners don’t work that way anymore. Today they search on their phone, open three contractors in three tabs, and compare. Then they contact whoever makes it easiest to get an answer.
Not the best contractor. Not the cheapest. The easiest to reach.
That’s a hard truth for tradespeople who pride themselves on quality work. But it’s the reality: the job often goes to someone slower on the tools, but faster on the reply.
Four signs your website is passive
A passive website waits for the visitor to do all the work. Here’s how to tell if yours is one.
- The only way to reach you is a phone call. If you’re on a roof or under a sink, that call rings out. Many people won’t call at all at 9 PM, but they would send a text.
- Your phone number is buried. If a visitor has to scroll to the footer to find it, you’ve already lost some of them.
- Your best reviews aren’t on the page. Homeowners want proof you’re good before they reach out. If your 5-star reviews live only on Google, the site isn’t doing its job as a closer.
- Nothing happens after they leave. No record of who visited, no follow-up, no second chance.
If you recognised two or more of those, your site looks fine and does nothing.
What a working website does instead
A working contractor website is built around the four things a homeowner needs to decide:
- What you do. Clear service pages, in plain language, for the jobs you actually want.
- Where you work. Your service area, stated clearly, so they know you’ll come out.
- Proof you’re good. Your best reviews and real job photos, up front, not hidden on a separate page.
- One obvious way to reach you. Ideally a one-tap text, so they can send a photo of the damage without waiting for you to answer the phone.
That last point matters more than most contractors expect. A text is low-pressure for the homeowner. They can send it from the couch, at night, without worrying about an awkward phone call. And when it lands on your phone as a text, you can reply between jobs.
Design is only half the answer
Here’s where most web designers stop. They build a better-looking, better-structured site and hand it over. That’s an improvement, but it still leaves the hardest problems unsolved.
What happens when a visitor calls and you miss it? What happens when someone texts, you reply the next morning, and they go quiet? What happens after the job is done and a happy customer means to leave a review but never does?
A website can’t answer those questions on its own. That’s why at Prospect Labs we build the site as the front end of a complete marketing system. The site starts the conversation. The system around it makes sure the conversation doesn’t die:
- Missed calls get an instant text back in your business name.
- New enquiries get automatic follow-ups, so a busy day doesn’t turn into a cold lead.
- Finished jobs get a one-click review request, with polite reminders.
- Past customers get referral and return-customer campaigns months later.
Do you need a new website?
Maybe not. Some contractors have a site that’s perfectly fine to look at. The real question isn’t how it looks. It’s what happens after someone lands on it.
If the honest answer is “they look around and maybe call,” the fix isn’t a prettier homepage. It’s a system that starts a conversation with every visitor and keeps it going while you’re on the job.
Find out where your leads are leaking
On a 60-minute strategy call, we’ll look at your current website, your reviews and what happens today when you miss a call. We’ll tell you honestly whether your site is worth keeping, and show you the full system running on live client accounts. No contract, no pressure.
